A hybrid circuit breaker with fault current limiter circuit in a VSC-HVDC application

Abstract A conventional hybrid circuit breaker (HCB) is used to protect a voltage source converter-based high direct current transmission system (VSC-HVDC) from short fault. With the increased converter capacity, DC protection equipment also requires regular upgrade. This paper adopts novel type of HCB with fault limiter (FCLC), and focuses on responses during faults, which are associated parameter selection. PSCAD/EMTDC based simulation three-terminal VSC-HVDC confirms effectiveness value FCLC, by using an equivalent modelling approach. Laboratory experimental tests validate results. The peak reduced according limiting inductor (CLI) increase, can be isolated more quickly. By adopting parallel metal oxide arrester (MOA) main branch HCB, stresses across components decrease transient continuous operation, less energy needs dissipated MOA. remnant for all cases transmitted power dissipating resistor (PDR) in final stage, lowest possible value. When transferred FCLC branch, spikes occur, while smaller PDR required absorb stage.
